The Flower

Hmm... saw this on the jailbreak and thought it was an awesome video... expertly crafted... with a rather controversial subject matter.

It reminds me of good propaganda... in that whilst visually stunning, it isn't a balanced or an objective view of this subject matter.

Still worth a watch.

I finally got my own domain :: www.headphonaught.com :: and have renamed my "flavors.me" account accordingly. I haven't gone for hosting because I'm pretty happy with blogger, flickr & tumbler at the moment. I may reconsider this later on but am happy for now. So yeah... if you want an all-you-can-eat space for my stuff then check out www.headphonaught.com

Thanks to JD, Innes & Royzoner for their help with this. Tx

Last day in Scarborough

Our last day in Scarborough was wonderfully chilled... a stroll along the front in the sun. Fab.

More from Scarborough ... part 2

080710_ Miriam #2

On the Thursday of the week we were in Scarborough... we went on a ride on the miniature steam train that takes you from Peasholm Park to Scalby Mills. I think we all have an inner-trainspotter... and I was not the only one who enjoyed the trip.

Reason for the trip was to explore the Sealife Centre... in which my "nifty fifty" came into its own as a fantastic lens for low light. However, the manual focus combined with moving subjects made for an interesting photographic experience.

Afterwards we returned to Peasholm Park... to be utterly gutted to find the Naval Warfare to be cancelled. Anyone who has been to Scarborough and experienced the Naval Warfare show in Peasholm Park will feel my pain - sure its dated... especially in a post-Avatar world but its dated-ness and distinctly analogue nature add to the value of the experience... its fun because its wooden planes zipping down wires and real gunpowder flashes. Was disappointed to have missed it.

The rest of my photos from Thursday are available here (just remember to scroll down).

Everyone needs a compliment... now and again

I receive this compliment a wee while ago... and it has really helped me see my photography for what it is. It was completely unsolicited but very welcome... thanks Andy!

It also got me thinking about compliments in general. If we like something someone has done... made... said... posted... do we tell them?

Repaired

My mum has skills with a sewing machine. She also has patience when it comes to my requests for repairs on my collection of increasingly threadbare secondhand Levi's. She will help rescue a pair of jeans and not relegate them to the bin... at least without giving them a good go first. She has the ability to repair my Levi's as well as the patience to see the repairable in what others would consider junk. Reminds me of God... but with lives. Inspired by this I've created some images using "addLib" on my iPhone to recognise & thank my mum for what she's done. That said, I know she would prefer chocolate.

a strange feeling...

040710_ Donkey on the beach

I watched this donkey walk along the beach in Scarborough... he/she didn't have a rider unlike the donkeys that carrying Dayna & Miriam... but felt compelled to walk with them. It was a bittersweet sight... one that has stuck with me.

On returning from my holidays... I had a strange feeling. I'm not entirely sure how to describe how I feel other than to say I can empathise with parents whose children have left home.

I'm being metaphorical, of course. Neither Dayna or Miriam have left home. Its just the closest I can describe the feeling.

I used to be part of things. Lunchtimes held a certain excitement for me as I met with various folks to discuss/collaborate/plan/participate and dream dreams in the "missio dei".

I feel like I have been left behind. I feel like the people I met with are now "out there" doing... being... and I'm still here. Left behind.

I can't put my finger on why I feel this way. Its just that I do.

My lunchbreaks still involve meeting up with some wildly amazing people... each an expert in their own field of geekery... that I can learn from and be with.

Thing is... I don't think is just my lunchbreaks but in general - my lunchbreaks being a noticeable "symptom".

I am inactive in the "missio dei".

I no longer contribute to the "missio dei".

I no longer participate in the "missio dei."

I'm not sure where to go with this... and have disabled comments because this isn't a deliberate whine to get sympathy.

Its just how I feel.

the beach + the park + pizza + a film... all with my family = the perfect day

040710_ Donkey Concession

I wish we got better weather in the UK. When its sunny... when its warm... we don't need to go anywhere. We have awesome beaches. We have awesome parks.

When its sunny, nothing beats grabbing some time at the seafront in Scarborough... or wandering around such an uniquely interesting park as Peasholm Park.

The rest of my photos from two weeks yesterday and today are online here.

In the evening, we went for pizza in York (Frankie & Benny's) before going to see Eclipse.

Pretty much the perfect day.

Leaving France... Arriving in Scarborough

030710_ Futurist

Two weeks ago today, we left our campsite early... and headed for Calais. Leaving early was an inspired choice as this was also the start of the French school holidays and, according to the news, the roads were packed. We missed any busyness and had a sweet drive to the port.

After a fab crossing... we headed up to Scarborough. Rather than come straight home... we had decided on a week in the Yorkshire seaside resort... one we all, as a family, love.

After getting settled and picking up some food... we headed down to the front for a donder. It wasn't Paris... but it was Scarborough.

Last day in France

020710_ Olly

Two weeks ago today ... well, yesterday... we spent our last day in Val d'Europe having a donder around the discounted designer outlet and shopping mall there. We ate, drank and took it easy. Then headed back to the campsite to eat, drink and take it easy.

I loved France... albeit I prefer Italian food. That said, I hope to return soon.

PS :: the photos in this post were taken with my iPhone4. I love its camera and hope to explore it capabilities in due course.

Paris - Day 3

010710_ Paris #1

Two weeks ago today... we went back to Paris for what was our final day there. We utilised our "all-you-can-eat" train tickets and zipped about in the Metro... to avoid the heat and the walking.

First stop was on Île de la Cité - one of the islands on the Seine - to see Notre Dame de Paris and la Sainte Chapelle. Both are stunning churches, in their own right. Notre Dame de Paris is huge and spacious... whereas Sainte Chapelle has some of the most glorious stained glass windows that I have *ever* seen.

In between visiting these churches... we called in on the Crypte Archeologique which contained the fascinating ruins from the Gallo-Roman times... and ate onion soup and pizza in a bistro/cafe.

After Sainte Chapelle we walked along the Rive Gauche to the Musée d'Orsay. Olly is huge fan of the Impressionists and I wanted to see their work. We saw works by Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin and some chap called Van Gogh. Our only disappointment was that "Bedroom in Arles" was in San Francisco.

The building in which the Museum is housed is truly stunning. Unfortunately photography was banned there.

After the museum... we headed back home. Content in what we had accomplished.

More photos are available here.

Paris is an amazing city... one that I've fallen in love with and hope to go back soon.

A day in Provins

300610_ Provins #34

Two weeks ago today... we chose not to go to Paris and, instead, drove to the small medieval town of Provins ... a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its Champagne fairs.

We had a donder about... ate in a lovely wee Arabic cafe where the owner and locals were really pleasant and friendly... investigated a church on the main street... and went shopping (girls bought bags & ornaments / I bought a BIC four colour pen).

It was a wonderful place for a visit. I've added my pics from the 30th to this set on Flickr - please check them out.
