This is cool :: Shout to the Lord on American Idol
I don't follow American Idol and don't know the context of this song... but thought it was cool. This would NEVER happen on British TV... maybe thats a good thing... maybe its not.
What do you think? Is having this song on mainstream TV a good thing?
U*P*D*A*T*E
The discussion in the comments is fab and I thank everyone who has tossed in their 2 cents worth. There is an interesting US / UK split that I am thinking about just now. Keep it going. If you haven't already... please let me know what you think.

I saw this. They sang it twice over two shows. The first time they omitted the word Jesus which was reinstated the second time round. I can't remember if they were pressurised into the change.
I guess it plays to their constituency. It would seem nafter on British tv and I don't think the tv execs would go for it anyway.
As it is it's not a bad song and sounds better outside a church service. So why not. Obviously someone involved in one of the highest rated US tv shows thought it was worth it. Overall I'd say a positive thing.
I wonder if they asked the singers if it was ok? Or just told them.
i saw this the other day & still can't make up my mind what i think about it..
On the one hand, it's a worship song... are these folks really Christians singing praises to God, or are they meaningful words being sung for the heck of it?
On the other hand.. if it gets God into that many households it's maybe not so bad...
amazing, and complete with side step dancing too.
I reckon its got to be a good thing, you never know, that one song might have changed one of their lives.
xx
i don't watch American Idol but I had some issues with them singing "Shout to the Lord." Maybe I'm not being open-minded enough - I'll give you that but it just seems odd that a show entitled, "American Idol" where the goal is to make the next "pop-idol" is trying to baptize itself by singing a great worship song to a God who says, "thou shalt have no other gods (idols) before me."
There are probably equal pros and cons to the use of the song - but for whatever reason it just didn't sit well with me.
Sorry, but it makes this North American puke. Worship turned into cheap entertainment, sung by people who may or may not actually love "the Lord"...and who are competing against each other in a contest. Barf! BARF!!! I'd rather they sung AC/DC than cheapen worship of the Almighty God. If I was in the audience, I would have got up and walked out, a disgruntled follower of Jesus.
I kind of agree with Paula - it made me want to puke. The whole 'Idol' thing makes me want to puke as well. Actually, the 'Idol' type shows and most of the so-called 'drama' shows (how many CSI's do we need anyway) are the reason why our TV is rarely on these days. The only show I watch on a regular basis is 'The Hour' with George Stroumboulopoulos (http://www.cbc.ca/thehour/). Other than that we watch 'Scooby Doo' and movies. As far as 'Shout to the Lord' goes, it just so overdone and overhyped as are most of the Hillsong songs anyway. It should be no surprise that it finally found its way on to such a contrived, overhyped vehicle as 'Idol'.
