9/11 tomorrow - the Salvation Army's response

As the world focuses on New York tomorrow... I thought I would link to this article on the blog of the Canadian Salvation Army. It reviews the work done by the Salvation Army in response to 9/11...
Arriving within a half-hour of the first plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, The Salvation Army was the first relief organization to arrive on the scene at “Ground Zero” and provided extensive support for relief workers and volunteers. The Army continued to support the recovery effort throughout the months-long clean-up process. Over the long term, The Salvation Army assisted thousands of people impacted by the September 11 attacks with practical assistance as well as spiritual and emotional care. This activity continues to this day.
I know I shouldn't be proud... but I am. I would encourage you to read the whole article :: Link and then consider the words of James 1: 26 & 27 (The Message)
Anyone who sets himself up as "religious" by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world.
Think about it.

As you know Diane and I have just come back from holidays, We missed everyone so much, but we managed to find a church in Sin City (a feat in itself), it was a Baptist church, a lovely place.
For the first time I was on the outside of the Army looking in, I can say without a shaddow of a doubt that other Christian organisations look at the Army in a very favourable way ("Your in the Salvation Army, what a great organisation, they do so much good work")This statement from an american long service Baptist made me very proud to belong to such a well thought of organisation.
So yes I too am proud of the Army, and very soon (God willing) more and more people will get to hear just how proud I am to serve God through the Army.

I'm proud and I'm not connected with the Salvation Army except that we are all part of the body of Christ. I'm proud because through the Salvation Army, Jesus' hands and feets were on the scene quickly. Hats off to the Salvation Army and the wonderful work they do.

I find pride to be a negative emotion... one that looks back instead of looking forward (hence why it comes before a fall :-) )

The Army does great work... and this must continue. I will do my bit to ensure it continues.

However, we can't dwell on the past... nor can we dwell on our achievements... We must focus on the Lord and the people we will meet in the future who need our help.

As I quoted its not about "hot air" but action.

Hope this makes sense?

Thanks for posting this! What a great scripture from the Message! It's a great reminder for us to remember 9/11 but more importantly to see their action as an example and call to go forth in everyday life as followers of Christ in our own communities. Adele
