something old... something new... 2

Got me thinking ::
What if people didn't want to change / move from the Walkman. As the world became more advanced, a small group of people kept to the Walkman and their precious tapes.
They were comfortable with the mechanics of the Walkman and had a vested interest in protecting tapes.
Anyone within their group who used CDs / MDs (remember them???) or, Heaven forbid, a flash/ hard drive... would be criticised for not being distinctive or not being "true" to the group.
Instead of adopting what the rest of the world is adopting... this group becomes increasingly irrelevant as it militantly pursues the "true" path :: The Walkman.
I am sick and tired of traditionalism for traditionalism's sake. Bob Marley once sang that in this great future, you can't forget your past and I believe this to be true...
BUT sticking to a tradition for its own sake is just plain stupid! We need to keep relevant and reinvent ourselves for the day and age we are in.
Church is a person-made institution and should be continually reinvented to remain relevant to the age we live in. This doesn't mean we change God's Word or reinvent the person of Jesus - they stay the same :: Jesus is as relevant today as He was 2000 years ago...
It's just that no one says thee or thou now except Shakespearian actors.
Just because it worked in your day doesn't mean it works today... Stop looking backward and start looking to today... for the future is defined by what we do today... even though what we do today will not be relevant in the future.
What do you think?

Good metaphor/story Thomas! i remember my first Sony walkman and cd player. i'm just glas i don't have to carry those dang blasted cassette tapes and cds around with me. iPods RULE!!!!!
Absolutely - tradition for the sake of it is dangerous. On the other hand, change for the sake of it is also dangerous (but I know that's not what you're talking about here)
We need to keep the traditions that are useful, and do away with the ones that are damaging. Those that are neither useful nor damaging are up for debate :)
Incidentally, I still use a MD recorder to record our meetings - you garageband people are heretics!
Agree with your point about change for change's sake... I also need to point out that we have to be careful when we change things that the elderly are happy with just to appease the young.
At the end of the day, its about moving forward. We are a MOVEMENT of God's people and not a STATIC!
